A bareback pad is ideal for riders who enjoy riding without a saddle but still want more grip and stability on the horse's back. A pad has no (stirrup) leathers and comes with a girth to keep it in place – offering the comfort of a saddle without the full weight and structure of a traditional one.
Riding with a bareback pad gives a sense of freedom, as it places you closer to your horse. It allows you to ride without a saddle but provides extra grip to prevent slipping. This makes it a great choice for riders looking to strengthen their connection with their horse while preserving the horse's freedom of movement.
A bareback pad is placed directly on the horse's bare back. While it provides less support than a traditional saddle, it offers more grip than riding with nothing at all – especially noticeable on horses with high withers and/or prominent spines. It's often more comfortable for the horse, as it doesn’t feel the constant pressure from the rider’s seat bones as much.
• Improved seat: Riding with a bareback pad helps you develop an independent and flexible seat – a great benefit for any rider.
• Close contact: It enhances close contact by letting you feel every movement and even tension or relaxation in your horse.
• Better balance and confidence: You’ll feel your horse more clearly, helping you build balance and confidence.
• Anatomically shaped: Bareback pads mold to the horse’s body, allowing free movement.
To extend the life of your bareback pad, avoid washing it too frequently. Only clean it when it’s really dirty. Hand washing is preferred to prevent material damage.
After each ride, remove hair and dirt to keep your pad in top condition.
Pads made with lambskin or wool are best cared for using a specialized wool detergent. SEE LINK: natural lambskin detergent - Becidor

In recent years, the selection of bareback pads has grown significantly. Today, there are various models with unique features depending on the brand.
The biggest differences usually lie in the materials used, which influence both price and quality.
There are many variations – including dressage, all-purpose, and western-oriented models. Some versions offer extra support like thigh or knee rolls, or back support for the rider.
Brands like Christ, F.R.A., EDIX, and BAREFOOT offer bareback pads with foam or mesh inserts. These inserts give the horse more spinal comfort and freedom of movement while maintaining close contact.
