The cross-tied bitless bridle exerts pressure on the nose. With this bridle, the horse experiences pressure around its nose again during a downward transition. This is because there are crossed chin straps attached at the bottom, to which the reins are connected. During a downward transition, you essentially close the nose in a bit. When turning left, the horse feels pressure on the right side of its nose, which effectively pushes it in the right direction.
